Symptoms and Characteristics of Emotional Deprivation
Disorder
* Insufficiently Developed Emotional Life –
The individual is incapable of establishing normal, mature contact with others. This abnormal emotional rapport with others causes the person to feel lonely and uncomfortable in social settings – he or she feels like a stranger, not part of the group. In essence, the person feels like a child or a baby, and others must direct themselves to the individual just as an adult would with a young child. The person can usually establish a willed rapport with others because intellectually the person believes they should be interacting with others, however, friendships are superficial as the person lacks the capacity to have an emotional investment in relationships.
* Insecurity & Uncertainty – usually manifested as fear:

Can be in the form of a generalized anxiety

Fear of hurting others or hurting someone else’s feelings

Fear of contaminating others (ex. With a cold)
* Feel incapable of coping with life - fearful
* Hesitation and Indecisiveness
* Oversensitivity
* Need to Please Others
* Self-consciousness
* Helplessness – do not dare to say “no” for fear of rejection therefore frequently taken advantage of
* Inferiority and Inadequacy – uncertainty causes them to fail repeatedly, therefore feel inferior
* Feel Unloved

They feel incapable of loving

They feel they are not lovable in themselves

They are suspicious of any token of affection – continually doubt sincerity of others

* Show Signs of Disintegration in New Circumstances – new job, move, landlord, etc.
